Chelsea 6 Wolves 0: Di Matteo hails Azpilicueta, Moses and Piazon
Chelsea 6 Wolves 0: Roberto Di Matteo was full of praise for trio after they were handed their first starts of the season
Roberto Di Matteo reserved special praise for Cesar Azpilicueta, Victor Moses and Lucas Piazon after the trio made their first starts for Chelsea in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup demolition of Wolves.
Gary Cahill set the Blues on their way with a fourth-minute header, before Ryan Bertrand and Juan Mata made it 3-0 before half-time.
Oriol Romeu then netted a penalty soon after the break, with Fernando Torres and Moses completing the third-round rout at Stamford Bridge.
“They [Azpilicueta, Moses and Piazon] did well, and we knew they would,” said Di Matteo. “They’re good players and we see them do it in training all the time.
“Lucas has been fantastic through the youth system and adapted very quickly in training, making a very good account of himself. He deserved it today and I hope he gets plaudits for his performance because he deserved it, as did Victor Moses and Azpilicueta.”
Di Matteo also praised Torres after the Spaniard netted his first goal in a month.
“Fernando is positive,” he added. “We talk to all our players and he is very positive. He is feeling a lot sharper, the goals will come. We all believe that.
“You can’t expect a sudden flood of goals, we want consistency over the season and we feel he will get that.”
John Terry captained the side after spending part of the day defending himself against a Football Association charge of misconduct – and Di Matteo insisted the centre-half was in the right frame of mind to play.
“We were talking with John to see what his mindset is and he’s been very positive,” said the Chelsea boss. “He wanted to play and do what he usually does for the team so there was no problem with the selection.”
