Giovanni Trapattoni has revealed Sunderland winger James McClean is unlikely to start the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Germany in October.

The 23-year-old was reprimanded by the Ireland manager after the former Derry City midfielder posted a Tweet aimed at Trapattoni.

McClean was disappointed not to feature in a 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan, a side ranked 116 places below the Men in Green, on Friday.

The Black Cats star was impressive in a 30-minute cameo in Ireland’s 4-1 win against Oman in a friendly at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night, but Trapattoni insisted McClean is unlikely to be in his first-team for the next qualifier.

“Probably no,” Trapattoni said when asked if McClean would start against the Germans on 12 October.

“Because I think about Aiden McGeady and others. Every manager must think about the strength of the opponents.”

Trapattoni added: “I am not angry with him [about the Tweet]. I never get angry with my players. I have coached 2,000 players in my career.

“I wouldn’t be a manager if I got angry with my players and I don’t watch Twitter.”

Meanwhile, Oman manager Paul Le Guen, who previously coached Rangers, admitted he was impressed by Ireland’s performance at Craven Cottage.

“It’s not such a big surprise for me [how the Republic played],” the former Rangers manager said.

“They are powerful side, they are fast. It was too complicated for us and too many of our players are not fit enough because the season has not started yet in Oman and the players have just finished Ramadan.

“We knew it would be tough.”
