Liverpool boss Rodgers wants to see Downing commitment
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers calls on Stewart Downing to show his commitment and "fight for the shirt" at Anfield
Brendan Rodgers has called on Stewart Downing to fight for his Liverpool future by showing his commitment to the Anfield club.
Downing has failed to make an impact on Merseyside since his £20m move from Aston Villa last summer and has started just one Premier League game under new Kop boss Rodgers.
And the Northern Irishman has demanded to see more commitment from the England winger before he considers handing him a regular first-team spot.
“It hasn’t quite worked out for him as he would want it. The big challenge for him now is that commitment to the cause to fight, because he has the qualities,” said Rodgers, whose side travel to Norwich on Saturday.
“He has a wonderful left foot but what is important is that it is more than talent. Talent alone is not enough. You have to work hard, you have to fight for the shirt.
“We have seen that in a number of the young players and if you don’t do that then longer-term you won’t be here. It is as simple as that really.”
