Ex-Liverpool star Alonso encouraged me to join QPR, reveals Granero
QPR's new signing Esteban Granero reveals former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alosno encouraged him to move to England
Esteban Granero has revealed former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso encouraged the Queens Park Rangers midfielder to move to the Premier League.
Granero, 25, has followed in the footsteps of his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Alonso by moving to the English top flight in his mid-20s.
The Spain Under-21 international, who completed a £9m switch from the La Liga champions to QPR in August, is hoping to further his career in England as Alonso did so successfully at Liverpool.
“I have a lot of [Real Madrid] team-mates who have played here in the Premier League,” said Granero.
“They said very good things about the experience of playing in England. They all had very good experiences here.
“They have all developed a lot in England. They told me I was going to be happy here. I will try my best in this league, and QPR is the perfect place for me to be.”
He added: “I have a very good relationship with Xabi. He played here for a lot of years. I respect his opinion a lot.”
QPR’s new signing admitted he was always interested in the Premier League, particularly Rafael Benítez’s Liverpool side which boasted Spanish stars such as Luis García, Fernando Morientes, Fernando Torres and his idol Alonso.
“I used to watch Liverpool games because there was a lot of Spanish footballers there,” added Granero.
“Also one of my favourite players is Xabi Alonso who played with me at Madrid the last three years. I like the way he plays and I tried to watch his games.
“But when I said I liked the Premier League, it’s not only about one team, but the football that is played here, which is respected [worldwide].
“This is pure football. That’s why I like the Premier League.”
