Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool’s young stars can take the club forward after a plucky display in a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United on Sunday.

The Liverpool manager started 17-year-old Raheem Sterling who impressed against experienced France international Patrice Evra, while Martin Kelly excelled at right-back.

Rodgers replaced Fabio Borini with Spainish starlet Suso at half-time, and the teenager played a role in Steven Gerrard’s opener, while he tested Anders Lindegaard with powerful attempt.

Despite goals from Rafael and Robin van Persie sealing a United win, the Reds boss was encouraged by the trio’s performance after an eye-catching 5-3 victory over Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday.

“Fabio goes off and young Suso came on and I think you could see the excitement,” said Rodgers.

“There are a group of young players here who hopefully in the next few years can take the club forward.

“We’ll have to wait and see with the injuries, but on the other hand the positives are some young players are getting an opportunity and doing very well.”

The 39-year-old is also taking heart from Arsenal’s poor start to the Premier League campaign last term after Liverpool extended their winless run to five games.

“I remember Arsenal last year didn’t get off to a great start,” he added.

“I think performance wise, everyone can see the growth in the group. There are a lot of young players looking to define a style of play.

“I think we’re seeing that and seeing some a lot of positive moments in the games, particularly over the last couple of weeks.

“There has definitely been growth and I’ve got great confidence. Very, very soon our luck will change and we’ll do what it takes to win games – and when we do, I believe we’ll fly.”
