Man City’s Roberto Mancini: Arsenal are Premier League title contenders
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes Arsenal are genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season
Roberto Mancini believes Arsenal can compete for the Premier League title this season.
The Gunners are unbeaten in their opening four league games, including a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
However, Arsene Wenger’s men, who have only conceded one goal domestically, face their sternest test of the campaign against Manchester City on Sunday.
But the Citizens manager is wary of the Gunners, with the Italian considering the north London side to be contenders for the top flight crown.
“Arsenal can compete for the title,” Mancini said.
“I don’t know if they are better than last year but there is less pressure. Maybe they can do better than last year for this reason. I think they are a good team.”
Wenger has signed Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolksi to compensate for the departures of key men Robin van Persie and Alex Song.
Cazorla and Podolski combined to devastating effect at Anfield, and Mancini is worried by Arsenal’s prowess on the counter-attack ahead of their meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
“They have lost one or two important players like Van Persie and Song but all the players he bought are good players with experience,” he added.
“I think Arsenal are very strong on the counter attack. I watched the game against Liverpool [a 2-0 win] and they played really well.
“They have two important players, Cazorla and Podolski, and Giroud didn’t score but is a good player and we should pay attention to him. Their counter attack is very strong.”
