Man United transfers: Sir Alex Ferguson reveals the 19-time English champions had scouted Ángelo Henríquez since he was 14
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Manchester United had been scouting new signing Ángelo Henríquez since the Chilean was 14 years old.
The Red Devils completed a deal for the Universidad Chile star on Wednesday for an undisclosed fee after United exercised an option to sign the 18-year-old.
“We scouted him when he was 14 years old and just monitored him,” Ferguson told United’s website.
“When he turned 18, we knew we could take him; it’s the first time we can sign them in this country, at 18, and so we were very fortunate the Chile Under-20s were over here.
“They were in tournaments at the Milk Cup [in Northern Ireland] and over in Holland.
“We watched all the games and everyone said: ‘You need to bring him in’.
“He’s very quick and a good finisher. He’s strong, with great shoulders on him for a boy of 18. So hopefully he’ll do fine.”
Meanwhile, Ferguson extended an invitation to Olympic 100m and 200m champion Usain Bolt to take part in United’s friendly against Real Madrid Legends in 2013.
“He’s been to Carrington a couple of times and he did help Ronaldo with his sprinting,” Ferguson said.
“He’s a bit of a character and a big United fan.
“It could be brilliant and next year, when we play Real Madrid’s Legends again, there could be opportunities to bring him in and see how he does.
“I must thank him because Bolt was 4/5 to win each of the 100m and 200m, a week before the tournament started, so it was my biggest bet and I won.”
