Man City’s Maicon: We cannot afford to lose more ground on title rivals
Manchester City's Maicon warns the defending Premier League champions they cannot lose any more ground on their title rivals
Maicon has warned his Manchester City team-mates that the defending Premier League champions cannot afford to lose much more ground on their title rivals.
City are without a victory in four games, which includes their 4-2 defeat at home by Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.
The Eastlands outfit were held to a 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday after Laurent Koscielny netted a late equaliser.
It leaves Mancini’s men four points behind league leaders Chelsea, and Maicon urged the Citizens to improve quickly or face releasing their stranglehold on the title.
“It is difficult to say why it is happening because I only just arrived at the club,” Maicon told the Independent.
“The beginning of the season is difficult and a lot of clubs are conceding goals.
“But I know that Roberto [Mancini] is very focused on it. He wants to improve and we have to improve quickly because we can’t afford to have any more distance between us and the teams at the top of the league.”
Mancini clashed with Villa manager Paul Lambert in the League Cup tie, but Maicon does not see any issue with the Italian getting heated with the opposition or his players.
“He can get passionate but that is the way he should be,” he added. “If he gets angry he reminds everybody of the standards required.
“There is a minimum requirement that is always there. The players know they have to perform at that level.”
