Man City manager Roberto Mancini: I trust Micah Richards 100%
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini insists Micah Richards is still part of his plans despite Maicon's arrival
Roberto Mancini has claimed he trusts Micah Richards “100 per cent” and the defender is still part of his Manchester City plans despite Maicon’s arrival from Internazionale.
The England right-back is currently nursing an ankle injury suffered while representing Team GB at the London Olympics back in August.
Argentina international Pablo Zabaleta has been deputising for the 24-year-old, while Mancini completed a £3m deal for Brazilian Maicon before the transfer window closed.
But the City manager hinted Richards could be set to play on the right of a three-man defence as the Italian looks to utilise the club’s attacking defenders in a wing-back role.
“It changes nothing because I trust Micah 100 per cent,” Mancini said. “This year we’ve changed and play three and two wide and I think maybe Micah can play right centre-back.
“Micah has been injured for 40 days. He can play right-back, right central defender and this year I think we probably play more games than last year and we need to have one or two players more.”
Earlier this week, Richards insisted he was relishing competition from Maicon and Zabaleta to fill City’s right-back position.
“The manager has been playing a 3-5-2 formation, so there’s more chance that I’m going to play if he goes with that,” Richard’s told City’s website.
“But if he plays a 4-4-2, it’s going to be me, Zaba and Maicon battling it out for the right back position!
“I don’t mind though, I’ve had competition all my life. I’ve been here seven years and I’m still going, so a little bit of competition just makes it a little bit better.
“I just can’t wait to get back and get back playing and to show everyone what I can do all over again.”
