Ashley Young has heaped praise on Antonio Valencia after the Ecuadorian impressed for Manchester United last season.

The 27-year-old is set to face his former employers Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford on Saturday – United suffered a 1-0 defeat by the Latics at the DW Stadium last season.

England international Young has been impressed by Valencia’s attitude both on and off the pitch, with the winger scooping the Players’ Player of the Season and the Fans’ Player of the Season awards in May.

“Last season he had everything,” Young told United’s website.

“He attacks, he defends, he can shoot, he can cross, he can pass – he has it all and that’s why he scooped up everything at the end-of-season awards. It’s why the players voted for him and it’s why the fans voted for him.

“He’s fantastic to play with. Antonio, like every other player, knows how to look after himself as well – he knows what to eat, what to drink and he works closely with our fitness coaches.”

Valencia has scored 16 goals in 110 appearances for United since Sir Alex Ferguson paid £16m to bring the Ecuador international to Old Trafford in 2009.

And the Red Devils boss is pleased by Valencia’s continuing improvement, and especially his performances from right midfield.

“Antonio is always very professional and a great human being. I’m very happy with him,” said Ferguson earlier this week.

“He’s one of those players who is constantly maturing. Without doubt, his best position is wide right – he’s fantastic there.”
