Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect Roy Hodgson to call up Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand to his next England squad after John Terry’s international retirement.

The 33-year-old was controversially omitted from England’s 23-man travelling party for Euro 2012 this summer, with Hodgson citing “footballing reasons” for Ferdinand’s exclusion.

Terry’s decision to make himself unavailable for England has sparked speculation the Three Lions boss will turn to Ferdinand for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.

However, Ferguson doubts Hodgson will recall the Red Devils defender, although the United boss said that the ball would be in Ferdinand’s court should the opportunity arise.

“It’s entirely up to Rio,” Ferguson told United’s website. “I wouldn’t think he’ll get called up. I think Roy made his decision for the Euros and I can’t see him changing that.

“It would be difficult for him to go to Rio now and welcome him back. If that happens, it’s entirely up to Rio in terms of what he wants to do.

“I don’t know if Rio would do it – I haven’t asked him. It’s just speculation from the press at the moment after Terry’s decision to retire from international football.”
