QPR's Mark Hughes says Andre Villas-Boas' unhappy spell at Chelsea did not have a huge impact on the young manager's CV

Mark Hughes does not believes Andre Villas-Boas’ disappointing tenure at Chelsea had much of a detrimental impact on the Portuguese manager’s CV.

QPR take on Spurs at White Hart Lane on Sunday, with Villas-Boas registering his first Premier League win as Tottenham boss against Reading last weekend.

Hughes expects his 34-year-old adversary, who replaced Harry Redknapp in June, to have learned a lot from his unhappy spell at Stamford Bridge, and the Hoops boss has been impressed by Villas-Boas’ summer acquistions.

“Villas-Boas is well thought of. OK, he didn’t have the best of times at Chelsea but I don’t think that affected his CV in too much of a detrimental way,” said Hughes.

“He’s been able to get another great opportunity. He’s got a great squad there, and he’s been able to add to that. Obviously there’s been a turnover of players, but he’s bought well.

“I’m sure, as we all do, when we leave a role that there might have been things you would have done differently.

“I’ve done that and I’m sure other managers have done it, and perhaps he’s approached the Spurs job in a different way, or maybe learned from things that happened at Chelsea.”

Villas-Boas’ Chelsea side were often castigated for playing an alarmingly high line, exposing the lack of pace in the Blues’ back four.

But Hughes was impressed by Tottenham’s tactical set-up in their 3-1 victory over Reading, with Sandro and Moussa Dembele catching the QPR boss’ eye.

“I watched them against Reading and I was very impressed with them,” Hughes added.

“I thought they controlled the game very well, they’ve got two players in Sandro and Dembele who can get on the ball and control the game for them from that area of the park.

“They’ve got great attacking threats from out wide and obviously Jermain Defoe is playing really well. They’re a really strong outfit at the moment.”
