Rafael concedes that Manchester United were far from their best against Liverpool on Sunday but was thrilled to see his goal help the Red Devils claim three points.

Ten-man Liverpool took the lead shortly after half-time through Steven Gerrard, but Rafael’s sublime left-footed strike levelled the score, and Robin van Persie’s penalty secured the victory for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

The win kept United within a point of early pace-setters Chelsea – and Rafael admits a victory at Anfield is always a result to relish.

“It’s a very important three points,” Rafael told MUTV. “It wasn’t a great performance from us but in the last five years we haven’t won here so we’re very pleased.

“It’s definitely the best goal I’ve scored for United. It was a good moment to get it because it was so quick after they scored. If we hadn’t had scored them we might have got a little bit nervous so it was an important time to get the goal.”

Rafael added: “I was so pleased [to score] for the fans. They always give me such great support and I know this is an important game for them so I’m very happy.”
