Andre Villas-Boas is hoping Tottenham’s first win of the new season will give his side a much-needed confidence boost after Spurs eased to a comfortable victory at Reading.

A brace from Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale’s first goal of the season helped the north Londoners move up to 10th place in the table, with Hal Robson-Kanu netting an late consolation for the home side.

“We were chasing this win for quite some time and it’s important for everybody,” Villas-Boas told Sky Sports. “Hopefully we can shoot on from now on.

“I’m happy for the team in general. Everybody was very committed towards getting our first win. It’s always difficult against newly-promoted teams at their home. Hopefully this can be build-up for the future.

“It takes out the anxiety a little bit of winning for the first game, which is something that always sticks in the players’ minds.

“It gives us a good relaxed week of work ahead before the Lazio game and hopefully we can build on from this.”

Villas-Boas, whose side had suffered a defeat by Newcastle before drawing with Norwich City and West Bromwich, was pleased with his side’s bright start at the Madejski Stadium and was also thrilled to see Bale net the all-important second.

“We spurned our chances a lot in the first half, we could have gone 2-0 up early,” he said. “We looked bright and confident and played very good football.

“It was important for him [Bale] because he scored in the international break and he scores again now which improves his confidence and makes him a little bit more light towards the future.

“I’m [also] happy for Defoe to find the back of the net again. He’s on three goals in the Premier League and it shows the goal scorer that he is.”

Tottenham host Lazio in the Europa League group stage on Thursday before welcoming Queens Park Rangers to White Hart Lane next Sunday.
