Cristiano Ronaldo declared it was “job well done” after Real Madrid came from behind to beat Manchester City in their opening Champions League group game.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead against the run of play through substitute Edin Dzeko in the second half but Marcelo quickly cancelled out the visitors’ advantage.

City looked like they might claim a fortuitous victory when Aleksandar Kolarov scored a free-kick in the 85th minute.

But Madrid responded to the delight of the Bernabeu as Karim Benzema levelled and Ronaldo netted the winner deep into injury time to seal a 3-2 win.

“We’ve ended the game with the feeling of a job well done,” said Ronaldo.

“We played well from the first whistle to the last. We could have scored a lot earlier and avoided that situation at the end.

“It was a crazy game by then. We were the deserved winners. It is said that when achieving something takes more effort, it tastes sweeter when you get it, and that’s what happened tonight.”

Madrid have lost two of their opening four games in La Liga, leaving Jose Mourinho’s side eight points behind Barcelona.

And Ronaldo hopes beating the English champions can help the capital’s club kick-start the defence of their La Liga crown.

“We had to work hard, but our team always wanted to win,” he added.

“We felt we could score at any moment. Jose Mourinho spoke with us before the game and told us that something had to change.

“We had a difficult match but managed to score three times against the champions of England.

“I hope that this victory will now help us to improve in the Liga. We haven’t started well in that competition and we want to change that dynamic.”
