Roberto Di Matteo has played down the significance of Roman Abramovich’s visit to Chelsea’s training ground on Thursday, insisting the Blues owner is a regular visitor to Cobham.

Abramovich’s call came the day after the west Londoners sloppily squandered a two-goal lead against Juventus as they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Serie A champions at Stamford Bridge.

But Di Matteo, whose side host Stoke City on Saturday, insisted there was nothing unusual about Abramovich’s call to the training base – but did concede that the Blues must learn from their mistakes in their Champions League opener.

“He actually comes [to Cobham] quite often to be honest; it got picked up on yesterday,” Di Matteo told a news conference on Friday.

“He likes to be involved and comes down whenever he can. He’s followed us a lot this season; the pre-season tour in the States as well so he’s always around when he can [be].

“We weren’t happy about the result we got on Wednesday night for sure, so it wasn’t a particularly happy camp yesterday here but we’ll have to try and pick ourselves up, go again and try to win points in the Premier League now.”

Di Matteo added: “He’s the owner, he likes to know what’s going on and he likes to speak to people. He does that all the time.

“I have to focus on my job and try to prepare the players and the team for tomorrow’s game. That’s what I’m focusing on.

“As I said, you picked up on yesterday but he’s been here many, many times before.

“At a big club you always have pressure. You have to try and win games and win games in the right manner as well. That’s part of being a big club and there’s nothing different with us.”
