Southampton 4 Aston Villa 1: We showed great togetherness – Adkins
Southampton 3 Aston Villa 1: Nigel Adkins hails the Saints' "massive togetherness" after they secured their first league victory
Nigel Adkins hailed Southampton’s “massive togetherness” as the Saints mounted a second-half comeback to secure their first Premier League win of the season against Aston Villa.
Darren Bent gave the visitors a first-half lead against the run of play at St Mary’s to leave Southampton contemplating a fifth straight league defeat.
However, Rickie Lambert levelled in the 58th minute, before goals from Nathaniel Clyne and Jason Puncheon put the Saints 3-1 ahead with 18 minutes remaining.
Southampton’s prolific Lambert then netted his fourth goal of the season from the penalty spot in stoppage time to seal the win, and Adkins felt his side merited maximum points.
“The Premier League is a massive challenge for everybody and today was a deserved three points,” Adkins told BBC Sport.
“I thought we were in the ascendancy in the first half and we changed it around in the second half and the players did well, creating chances and we scored four goals.
“We want to pass the football, and I think the supporters understand that as well, and there was a massive togetherness in the stadium today.”
