Sunderland 1 Liverpool 1: First win around the corner – Steven Gerrard
Sunderland 1 Liverpool 1: Steven Gerrard says it won't be very long until the Reds turn around their season under Brendan Rodgers
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool’s first win of the season is just around the corner after the Reds secured a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
The Black Cats’ £12m signing Steven Fletcher netted his third goal of the campaign in the 19th minute to give Martin O’Neill’s men a first-half lead.
But Liverpool’s Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez finished from close-range in the 68th minute to secure a second point of the season for Brendan Rodgers’ side against the Black Cats.
Gerrard was pleased by the visitors’ performance despite succumbing to the club’s worst start to a season since 1911, and the Reds captain is hoping their first three points will come against Manchester United at Anfield next week.
“We knew it wasn’t going to happen overnight,” said Gerrard.
“We were very disappointed with our performance against Arsenal. We tried hard but it just didn’t happen.
“Today we tried hard and although we were 1-0 down at half-time, for the 90 minutes I thought we completely controlled the game.
“Their goal was against the run of play and I think anyone who watched that game will think Liverpool should have walked away with the three points.
“You saw our performance today and I think that’s a message that it won’t be very long for us.
“The first win is just around the corner and let’s hope that’s against Manchester United next week.”
