Ivan Lendl has admitted Tomas Berdych can be a “very difficult” opponent ahead of Andy Murray’s US Open semi-final match-up against the sixth seed.

The British No1 has a poor record against the Czech Republic star, trailing his last-four opponent 4-2 on head-to-head, and losing their only previous Grand Slam encounter at the French Open in 2010.

Berdych eased past world No1 Roger Federer in four sets to book his place in a maiden semi-final at Flushing Meadows, and Murray’s coach Lendl is expecting a difficult test.

“Well he has a lot of firepower,” added Lendl. “He can control the points and control sets, and it’s very difficult to defend against him.

“When he’s in form and he doesn’t make many mistakes, he’s very difficult to play against.”

Murray has reached seven of the last eight Grand Slam semi-finals, and Lendl believes the third seed, along with his rivals Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, have proven their superior quality over the past couple of years.

“Well Andy has shown in the last year [consistency],” said Lendl.

“I think it shows that not just Andy, but the top-four guys are better than the rest of the guys at the moment.

“It does not mean they can’t lose a match to other players, but they are winning the majority.

“Simply they are just better. They have less weaknesses, more weapons. They are more consistent and a bit fitter and more experience.”

He added: “Andy has been very consistent in Majors. He’s been in seven out of the last eight Grand Slam semi-finals. Obviously that’s very good.

“But that’s not why we are here. We are here to see Andy take care of business [against Berdych] and then come back Sunday and do the same thing.”
