Aston Villa’s Shay Given: Darren Bent frustrated at being dropped
Goalkeeper Shay Given admits Darren Bent is frustrated at being dropped by Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert
Shay Given has revealed Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is frustrated at being dropped by manager Paul Lambert.
The 28-year-old was stripped of the captaincy by the Villa manager in August, and the former Sunderland forward has not started the Birmingham outfit’s last two Premier League games.
Given, who is also out-of-favour at Villa Park, dismissed reports of a rift between Bent and Alex McLeish’s successor, adding that the striker’s frustration shows how much he cares for the club.
“We have Christian Benteke, who is a powerful young forward from Belgium who has done very well. So there is competition for places and that is something we need,” Given told the Daily Star.
“When players are left out it is a bigger worry for me if they are happy with being left out.
“Darren is frustrated to not be playing but that shows he cares and he wants to be in theteam .”
Villa are currently in 16th place after winning just once in seven attempts in the Premier League, and Given urged the club’s supporters to get behind Lambert’s side ahead of a difficult run of fixtures.
“It’s been a tough start and we’ve got a lot of young players who are not experienced in the Premier League,” he added.
“They need time to settle in but hopefully the fans stick with us. You look at the fixtures for the next month and we have Manchester City, Manchester United , Arsenal and Chelsea, which is going to be a tough run.”
