Barcelona president Sandro Rosell insists the club are in no rush to renew Lionel Messi’s contract.

The Argentine’s current deal expires in the summer of 2016 but the three-time Ballon d’Or winner is widely expected to extend his stay at Camp Nou.

And Rosell is confident the 25-year-old, who has already scored 12 goals in 11 games so far this season, will remain with the Catalan giants for the foreseeable future.

“We are confident that Lionel Messi will remain with us beyond next season,” Rosell told El Periodico.

“[His contract renewal] could be tomorrow or next year. His contract runs out in 2016 and it would be irresponsible for us not to extend it.

“At Barcelona we do not create controversy. We simply are Barcelona and we are a Catalan club. While we direct the club, we will not be used for politics.”
