Steven Gerrard and Suárez were unable to inspire Liverpool to a late comeback after Udinese were 3-2 winners at Anfield in the Europa League.

Elsewhere, Tottenham could only draw 1-1 with Panathinaikos, while Newcastle United sealed an emphatic 3-0 victory over Bordeaux at St James’ Park.

Here are a selection of top Tweets from the professionals on the Europa League action.

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon (‏@Aaron7Lennon) was disappointed to see Spurs surrender a lead: “Not the result we wanted, but we will concentrate on getting the win on Sunday. Great support as usual making the trip out here – get home safe. Also thank you for all the messages on the England call up.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) noted the contribution of the much-criticised Stewart Downing for Liverpool’s opening goal: “Goal for Liverpool, scored by Shelvey but more significantly, created by Downing.”

Liverpool’s goal scorer Jonjo Shelvey (‏@shelveyJ) is planning to see some comedy to cheer him up: “Disappointed to lose yesterday should of won and should of scored another! Excited to c @JohnBishop100 tomorrow at the echo.”

Injured Reds left-back Jose Enrique (‏@jose3enrique3) enjoyed the spectacle – not the result: “Great game by the team today but unlucky with the result. Good night :(“

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor (‏@NeilMellor33) feels his old club are conceding too many goals: “Disappointing result at Anfield. Good first half but not second half performance. In #Europa, we seem to be conceding far too many goals!”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) feels sorry for the Reds: “Feel for Liverpool. Played great first 45 minutes and then sloppy defending in the 2nd coupled with a disastrous OG killed their night!!”

Liverpool’s Suso (‏@suso30fernandez) is hoping to help the club bounce back against Stoke City: “I wasn’t on the bench today. Hopefully i will on Sunday. Great game but we conceded two goals in 10 minutes. Looking forward to the next game.”

Newcastle defender Danny Simpson (‏@dannysimpson) is delighted with the Magpies’ win: “So glad to be back playing! Massive result tonight and a clean sheet! It was good to get 90 minutes aswell. #newlungs”

Toon striker Samuel Ameobi (‏@Sammy_Ameobi) is pleased: “Good win!”

Finally, Didi Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann) comments on his two former clubs: “Well impressed with Newcastle tonight not so much with Liverpool …conceding far too many goals!”
