Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard: Jonjo Shevley deserves England call-up
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes Jonjo Shelvey deserves his call-up to the England squad for their World Cup qualifiers
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has merited his England call-up for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.
The 20-year-old was drafted into Roy Hodgson’s 23-man Three Lions’ squad on Monday after scoring once in six appearances for Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 team.
Shelvey has made an impressive start to the season under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, with the Charlton Athletic youth graduate scoring three times in nine games for the Reds.
Gerrard is hoping Liverpool benefit from Shevley’s promotion to England’s senior squad, with the Reds captain admitting the former Blackpool midfielder has been in good form.
“I’m really pleased for Jonjo,” Gerrard told Liverpool’s website.
“He has been improving all the time since he arrived at Liverpool and has grown into a good footballer with good vision who can create and score goals.
“He also listens which means he will only get better with more games and experience.
“Jonjo is playing with confidence at the moment and is in good form.
“This experience of being in the full England squad will be great for him and hopefully Liverpool will benefit from it as well.”
Lucas Leiva and Jose Enrique both congratulated Shelvey for his England call-up on Twitter.
