Jack Rodwell has defended his summer move to Manchester City after the midfielder endured a difficult start to his career at the Etihad Stadium.

The 21-year-old has started just two Premier League games for the Eastlands outfit after completing a £15m move from Everton to the Citizens in August.

Rodwell was guilty of mistakes against Southampton and Borussia Dortmund, but the England international insisted he would have been foolish to turn down a move to City.

“I’m young and English. I’ve not got a bad word to say about City. If they want you and sign you, then they have got intent for you,” said Rodwell.

“I was not guaranteed a starting place at Everton. I had a lot of injuries, Darron Gibson and Marouane Fellaini were in form, so it was a push for me to get in that side.

“But when the champions come knocking, it’s hard to refuse.”
