Man United’s Michael Carrick hails ‘terrific’ Danny Welbeck
Michael Carrick is gushing with praise for club and international team-mate Danny Welbeck following San Marino win
Michael Carrick is backing Danny Welbeck to establish himself as a one of the top strikers at both club and international level in seasons to come.
Carrick and Welbeck both started for England on Friday as Roy Hodgson’s men brushed aside San Marino 5-0 at Wembley.
And Welbeck’s Manchester United team-mate was full of praise for the 21-year-old striker following the game and admits he is a huge admirer of the forward.
“I am a massive fan. I am probably a bit biased because of the United connection,” said Carrick. “But ever since I have seen Danny I have been a huge fan and I expected big things of him. He has had a terrific couple of years now.
“People were looking at him when we signed Robin van Persie saying ‘where is his position, where is he going to fit in?’.
“But he showed he is still a major part of it. We have got so much strength, but he has been terrific, and he was terrific again on Friday against San Marino.
“If he keeps performing like that he is only going to get better.”
