Man United’s Patrice Evra: No way Tom Cleverley meant Newcastle goal
Patrice Evra refuses to believe that Tom Cleverley meant his goal during Manchester United's victory at Newcastle
Patrice Evra is convinced Tom Cleverley did not mean to score after the Manchester United midfielder’s goal at Newcastle United on Sunday.
With United leading 2-0, Cleverley made the three points secure when his curling long-range effort beat Steve Harper and dropped into the top corner in the 71st minute.
Replays suggested the 23-year-old was trying to pick out Robin van Persie, who was making a run at the far-post – but Cleverley insisted he meant his shot after the game.
Evra, however, refuses to believe his team-mate.
“There is no way he meant that,” Evans told MUTV. “To try and shoot from there, especially to bend it, he definitely didn’t mean it. I think he was looking for Robin van Persie at the back post but it went in.
“But that was a really important time for us to score a goal because they kept pumping the ball in the box and were getting one or two chances. It was important for us to get the 3-0 lead.”
Second-placed Manchester United are four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
