Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie to both score over 20 goals for Manchester United this season.

The Netherlands international has netted seven goals in eight appearances after completing a £24m switch from Arsenal to Old Trafford in August.

Ferguson also has Javier Hernández, Danny Welbeck and Rooney to deploy up front, and the United manager is delighted with his extensive attacking options.

“They could play up front. No doubt about that. I think one will always drop in. We don’t mind that. I think one will do that anyway,” said Ferguson.

“We have great options with that. Everyone apart from ‘Chicha’ can drop in or play up. I don’t agree that Wayne likes to face play. I think he played up on his own in 2009-2010 and scored 30-odd goals when playing up there on his own.

“If you go back to the season before last, Dimitar Berbatov and Chicharito took the load off Rooney in respect of the goal-scoring.”

He added: “Wayne will start scoring soon, once he gets a few games [under his belt]. His track record tells you each year he’s got better at his finishing.

“Robin’s had a great start with seven goals and if he and Wayne and possibly one of the other two strikers, Welbeck or Chicharito, gets to 20 goals we’re in business. I think both Wayne and Robin will get over 20.”
