Mikel Arteta: Arsenal were better than Chelsea and we’ll bounce back
Mikel Arteta feels Arsenal deserved something from the game after Chelsea beat Arsene Wenger's men at The Emirates
Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal played better than Chelsea during Saturday’s defeat by the league leaders – and insists the Gunners will bounce back from their first loss of the season.
Goals from Fernando Torres and Juan Mata either side of the break handed Roberto Di Matteo’s side victory at The Emirates, despite Gervinho having levelled for the home side before half-time.
Wenger’s Arsenal had earned a point at Manchester City the weekend before after having claimed all three points at Liverpool – and Arteta says the north Londoners can be content with their start to the new season.
“We have played probably against some of the best teams in the league and haven’t been battered or overplayed at all,” Arteta told Arsenal’s website.
“I think we’ve been better than Chelsea in the 90 minutes so that’s very positive. But obviously after a defeat, the first one of the season at home, it hurts.
“We will bounce back because we know how important it is now to get the three points in the Champions League.”
Arteta refused to point the finger at individuals for the two goals conceded, insisting it is the whole team’s responsibility to defend well.
“It’s a hard one to take but we’ve conceded from three set pieces in the last two games. That’s cost us points and it’s not good enough,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s something to do with the defence. It’s about an individual defensive set-up in the game which is a free kick or a corner. Today we haven’t defended well enough and we’ve conceded two goals that have cost us the game.
“It’s everyone’s responsibility. You can’t fault one player on that. We have to clean the lines up quickly and you can’t just allow runners like that in the box.”
