Newcastle 3 Bordeaux 0: Shola Ameobi delighted to get off the mark
Newcastle 3 Bordeaux 0: Shola Ameobi was delighted to net his first goal of the season as Magpies eased to victory
Shola Ameobi admitted his delight at netting his first goal of the season and sending Newcastle United on their way to victory over Bordeaux on Thursday.
Ameobi tapped home from close range in the 16th minute at St James’ Park to hand Alan Pardew’s men the lead after Gabriel Obertan fizzed an dangerous ball across goal.
The home side then doubled their lead five minutes before half-time when Danny Simpson’s cross was inadvertently turned into the net by Carlos Henrique.
Papiss Cisse made it three shortly after the break when he turned home Shane Ferguson’s cross, despite the Senegalese striker appearing to be offside as the pass was played.
“As a striker you want to get off the mark as quickly as possible and I missed the start of the season with an injury,” Ameobi told ESPN. “I’m just delighted to get a chance today.
“Obviously the strikers at the club are doing very well at the moment so I have to take my chances when I get them.
“On the whole, the team was fantastic. The side that was out there wanted it – you could see it.
“The players who probably haven’t been playing as much showed the manager that they want to be in that starting 11 week in, week out.”
The win leaves Newcastle top of Group D with four points from their opening two Europa League games.
Newcastle boss Pardew added: “What pleased me most was that we played with verve and energy again. The performance level was fantastic. We had to play very well tonight to make that as comfortable as it was.
“I can’t say the result flattered us because in the end I think we deserved to win by a distance, but we knocked the spirit out of them in terms of the goals.
“That’s a team that hasn’t been beaten for 17 games and it’s a great result for us.”
