Newcastle’s Harper aims to keep first-team spot when Krul returns
Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper wants to remain as first-choice goalkeeper once Tim Krul returns from an elbow injury
Steve Harper is desperate to remain as Newcastle United’s first-choice goalkeeper when Dutch shot-stopper Tim Krul makes his return from injury.
The Netherlands international has been sidelined with an elbow problem since September, with Harper stepping into Krul’s boots.
The 37-year-old has spent his entire career at Newcastle, acting as back-up to former Magpies keeper Shay Given before Krul emerged as number one.
Harper has set his sights on making 300 appearances for the club, but the veteran admitted it might be a tough target with Krul and Robbie Elliot providing competition for a starting spot.
“Tim’s comeback is not too far away, but we do have a lot of games coming up,” Harper told the Evening Chronicle.
“We have Robbie [Elliot] here too pushing for a place. He has made big strides forward in the last month or two. Those performances will do him the world of good.”
“I would like to get to 300, but I cannot see it happening at my age, but 200 would be nice. That is a landmark I would like to get to.
“We’ve got a long season ahead of us and we know there are plenty of games ahead.”
