Jose Mourinho has described Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo as “the best player in the universe”.

The Portugal captain once again faces stiff competition for the Fifa Ballon d’Or from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi – the Argentina international has won the award three years in a row.

Ronaldo scored 46 goals in La Liga last season as the former Manchester United winger helped Los Blancos wrestle the league title out of Barça’s grasp.

And Real Madrid manager Mourinho believes his compatriot deserves to win the award ahead of Messi, insisting Ronaldo is not from this planet, but “Mars”.

“When someone with the same responsibility as me comes out and says ‘Mine is the best on the planet’ then I have to say mine was not born in Madeira, he was born on Mars; he is not from planet Earth, he is the best in the universe,” Mourinho told A Bola.

“If Messi is the best on the planet, Ronaldo is the best in the universe. It would be a crime if Ronaldo did not win the Ballon d’Or.”
