Southampton 2 Fulham 2: We need to improve our defending – Adkins
Southampton 2 Fulham 2: Nigel Adkins admits the Saints need to stop conceding goals after rescuing a point at St Mary's
Nigel Adkins admitted Southampton have to work on their defending after the Saints came from behind to rescue a point against Fulham at St Mary’s.
The home side took an early lead when Jose Fonte glanced his header past Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
The visitors pressed for a leveller in the second half and finally made the breakthrough when Jos Hooiveld deflected in John Arne Riise’s shot.
Kieran Richardson netted from close range to put the Cottagers ahead before Fonte rescued a point for the Saints in the 87th minute.
“The first half was OK but the second half was more open and we gave away two bad goals. However, you have to look at the positives, which were that we got a point and we came from behind to do that,” said Adkins.
“We had some really good chances, particularly in the first half, we could have scored more goals. We actually scored three today but we have to work on keeping them out of our net.
“We can’t afford to score two goals and not come away with maximum points. But we have a point though and we move forward.”
Meanwhile, Martin Jol admitted he was pleased with a point after Fulham’s poor first-half performance at Southampton.
“It is always harsh to concede an equaliser so late on but we take into consideration our first-half performance, where we didn’t play well,” said Jol.
“We were better in the second but it is always disappointing when you concede from set plays.
“It is always difficult if you go to places like Southampton and concede a goal after four minutes, that is very disappointing.”
