David Moyes admitted he was pleased with a “hard-earned point” after the Toffees twice came from behind to salvage a draw at Wigan Athletic.

The home side took the lead through Arouna Kone in the 10th minute, but Everton struck back almost immediately though Croatia international Nikica Jelavic.

Franco Di Santo restored Wigan’s advantage in the 23rd minute, before Maynor Figueroa was adjudged to have fouled Kevin Mirallas in the Wigan area, with Leighton Baines netting a 88th-minute spot-kick to salvage a point for the Toffees.

“It was a hard earned point – we worked really hard to get back in to the game. We didn’t start well, but Wigan did,” said Moyes.

“We kept at it and deserved to get a goal back. I thought we had another penalty shout with Nikica Jelavic in the second half which should have been given.”

Wigan manager Roberto Martínez, who was fined £10,000 after his comments about referee Michael Oliver’s performance in a 4-0 loss at Old Trafford, admitted Figueroa made “slight” contact on Mirallas.

“I haven’t seen again [on the television]. But it seemed from where I was that there was a slight contact,” added Martinez.

“I haven’t seen it well enough to comment, but It looked as though it was a penalty live.

“We managed to stop Everton being a real threat and the amount of chances we created against this Everton side showed how good we are.”
