Arsenal 5 Tottenham 2: Theo Walcott claims Gunners have "shut up" their critics after they came from behind to beat 10-man Spurs
Theo Walcott declared that Arsenal have “shut up” some of their critics after the Gunners came from behind to beat 10-man Tottenham in the north London derby.
Emmanuel Adebayor had put Spurs ahead in the 10th minute but the Togo striker turned from hero to villain when he was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Santi Cazorla seven minutes later.
Per Mertesacker then equalised for the Gunners, before Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud gave the home side a 3-1 lead going into the break.
Cazorla added a fourth after half-time, with Theo Walcott tapping home a fifth after Gareth Bale had pulled one back for Andre Villas-Boas’s men.
“If we show that sort of ambition and courage I think we can climb right up that table now,” Walcott told Sky Sports after the game.
“We’ve shut a few people up with how good we were today. Everyone knows that we’re strong in that dressing room and we definitely showed it today. We showed great pace and never gave up.
“It’s going to give us tremendous spirit now. We’re getting a lot of players back to fitness. It’s always nice seeing Jack [Wilshere] come on and get a good run-out. He’s got that different side of the game that we haven’t quite had. Everyone’s looking bright and confident.”
The win moves the Gunners above their north London rivals into sixth place in the table – and Giroud, who netted his fifth Arsenal goal on Saturday, was thrilled win the victory.
“It was an amazing atmosphere this afternoon and I’m very happy to win my first derby,” he said. “It was very special for the fans and I’m proud to have won this game.”
