Wojciech Szczesny insists he is “happy” to have competition from Vito Mannone as the pair tussle for Arsenal’s No1 spot.

Szczesny made his return to action from injury against Tottenham Hotspur in last weekend’s 5-2 victory at Emirates Stadium and also featured in the 2-0 triumph over Montpellier in the Champions League in midweek.

With Szczesny sidelined, Italian Mannone was Arsene Wenger’s first choice between the posts following Lukasz Fabianski’s injury lay-off – and Szczesny says the competition from his team-mate keeps him on his toes.

“I’m happy to have the competition,” said Szczesny. “Obviously I was frustrated to be on the sidelines, not just matches but not training either.

“I managed to get back into the team and had two very good results. But I’m happy to have the competition from Vito. I hope it brings the best out of both of us.

“It’s normal. We’re good friends. I’ve known him ever since I joined the club. We’re happy for each other if we have a good game. But each of us wants to be No 1 and only one of us can be. It’s good competition.

“He’s done well. He’s a good goalkeeper. The least you can ask of him is that he will want to be No1. I’m happy with that.”
