The Gunners found themselves 2-0 up after 26 minutes but were pegged back by the Bundesliga side, leaving the Gunners in second place in Group B and only a point ahead of Olympiakos.
“I believe we have shown a good response to Saturday’s game and you feel the team is getting better,” said Wenger. “I think in one month, if we continue to develop, we will be there.”
The visitors took the lead in Germany in the 18th minute when Theo Walcott bundled his way through on goal and tucked his effort away after Olivier Giroud made a hash of his shot.
And Giroud then doubled the Gunners’ lead eight minutes later when he ghosted into the six yard box and headed home Lukas Podolski’s cross.
However, Schalke halved the deficit on the stroke of half-time when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fired his shot past Vito Mannone after being found by Lewis Holtby.
And the Bundesliga side rescued a point in the 67th minute as Jefferson Farfan’s shot was deflected into the net by Thomas Vermaelen.
“The regret we have is that we conceded the goal just before half time and we missed the [Theo Walcott] chance at the end of the game,” he added. “I think the two, of course, have a big impact on the result overall. Schalke never gave up and worked hard
“For us it was important first of all not to lose and if possible to win. We managed the first part, not the second one. I felt that overall we played reasonably well, but dropped physically in the second half.”
