Daniel Sturridge vowed to make the most of a “huge opportunity” after being called up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Sweden.

The 23-year-old Chelsea striker has been limited to just one start for the Blues this season and has netted two goals for Roberto Di Matteo’s men.

And the England forward admits it is difficult to stake his claim for an international spot when his club appearances are so restricted.

“It is a huge opportunity for me,” said Sturridge. “The manager has showed faith in me to pick me so it will be a huge opportunity.

“I think it is a lot more difficult when you are not playing regularly but I try and train as hard as I possibly can and wait for the opportunity and I am thankful for the England manager choosing me for this friendly.”

Crystal Palace’s highly-rated Wilfried Zaha has also been included in Hodgson’s squad for Wednesday’s clash and Sturridge believes the 20-year-old, who was reportedly torn between playing for England and Ivory Coast – his country of birth – can be a top player for the national side.

“I have watched him play a few times and he is a talented player. He looked sharp in training today. He has a lot of skills and can bring a lot to the table and I am looking forward to playing with him.

“I know Didier [Sturridge’s former Chelsea team-mate Drogba] has been trying to get him to play for the Ivory Coast because every country wants the best players and we want him to play for England.

“The manager has picked him to be involved in the squad. He has been here, he told me, since he was four years old. Whichever decision he makes is up to him. It is fantastic for him because he is not playing in the Premier League.”
