John Terry was full of praise for Roberto Di Matteo, hailing the Italian as “an absolute legend” after he was sacked by Chelsea last week.

Rafael Benítez was appointed as the Blues’ interim first-team manager until the end of the season, taking over from Di Matteo after he led the west Londoners to an historic FA Cup and Champions League double last term.

Terry admits the last seven days have been “difficult” for all at the club and says it was a “privilege” to play under Di Matteo.

“It has been a difficult week all round, both on and off the pitch,” Terry wrote in his programme notes ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

“I want to say that it was a privilege to play for Robbie. I had the pleasure, as a Youth Training Scheme player growing up, of watching and learning from him and to go on and play under him as captain was an honour.

“To win two competitions last season, including the Champions League that we had wanted for so long, was incredible.

“Robbie is a great man and an absolute legend. We wish him every success in the future, because saying thanks doesn’t seem enough.”

Terry added that he is looking forward to working with Benítez at Stamford Bridge. He said: “On Thursday, we welcomed Rafa Benítez as our first-team manager. All the players are looking forward to working with him.”
