Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata has been rewarded for his recent sparkling form by being named the Premier League player of the month for October.

The Spaniard netted five goals in October, including a brilliant brace against London rivals Tottenham in a man-of-the-match display at White Hart Lane.

Mata is the first Chelsea player to win the award since David Luiz in March 2011, but the 24-year-old was quick to praise his team-mates, including Oscar and Eden Hazard, upon receiving the accolade.

“I’m really enjoying [playing alongside them],” Mata told Sky Sports News. “They’re players who like to play with the ball, to assist and who have good movement – more or less like me.”

He later wrote on his Twitter account: “Very happy for last month. Let’s keep working, there is a long way ahead.”

Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson was named the Premier League manager of the month after a run of impressive form which has seen his side top the table.

“I’m pleased with our attacking play, that’s been a feature of our game,” Ferguson said upon recieving the award for the 27th time of his career.

“We’ve had an issue about defending, but in Saturday’s win against Arsenal we were back to what I expect of Manchester United defenders.”
