‘Chelsea should sign Falcao if Torres continues to struggle’
Chelsea should consider bringing in Radamel Falcao to replace Fernando Torres if the Spain striker continues to toil
Chelsea should consider cutting their losses over £50m striker Fernando Torres and sign Radamel Falcao as his replacement, according to Ruud Gullit.
Torres has struggled to live up to his hefty price-tag since swapping Liverpool for Stamford Bridge in January 2011, managing just 19 goals in 81 appearances for the Blues.
The Spaniard joined the west Londoners after having earned a reputation as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards at Liverpool, where he netted 81 goals in 142 outings.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for highly-rated Atletico Madrid forward Falcao in recent months, and former Blues striker Gullit believes the Colombian would be the perfect replacement for a stuttering Torres.
“If he can’t still do it at Chelsea, then they are going to have to look somewhere else. I think Falcao is a very good striker,” Gullit told the Daily Mail.
“I said at the beginning of the season that Chelsea might need another striker but obviously they wanted to give Torres a chance. If he has taken it, I don’t know.”
Gullit admits it is a “mystery” to him why Torres has been unable to rediscover his goal-scoring touch at Stamford Bridge.
“What he did in the past with Atletico, and Liverpool especially, was unbelievable,” added Gullit. “For some reason he can’t do it at Chelsea, it’s a mystery to me.”
