Roberto Di Matteo has led the calls for everyone involved in football to fight any sort of discrimination with “all our power” after Chelsea were dragged into a fresh racism storm this week.

A police investigation is under way after a Blues supporter made an alleged racist gesture towards a Manchester United player during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup clash at Stamford Bridge.

The news comes just weeks after Chelsea captain John Terry was handed a four-game ban by the Football Association, with the centre-half found guilty of using racist language towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

“I’ve always said that we are against any form of discrimination and we will support anybody who is fighting that. That’s our position and my personal view as well,” said Di Matteo.

“I think the fact that these incidents are happening gives a lot of media exposure and maybe makes people aware that we need to fight a problem that we have in society, and fight it a little bit harder than we thought.

“Everybody has to try their best and be involved in this process to try and eradicate it from the sport, and life in general.

“You can see the goodwill from everybody to try and fight these problems but it’s a problem that we have, not just in football but in our society.

“It’s something that we have to deal with and fight it with all our power.”
