Roberto Di Matteo is wary of the threat posed by “magnificent” Liverpool striker Luis Suárez ahead of the Reds’ trip to Chelsea on Sunday.
The Uruguayan forward has been the Merseysiders’ standout performer this season, netting 10 goals in 15 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ men, including the sublime equaliser against Newcastle United at Anfield on Sunday.
“He’s a magnificent player, and very dangerous,” said Di Matteo on Friday. “They don’t have many other strikers but they have some young talented players and some experienced players, Glen Johnson, [Martin] Skrtel, [Daniel] Agger, [Steven] Gerrard, [Jose] Enrique are all Premier League players with a lot of games in their legs.”
The Merseysiders have emerged victorious from the last four Premier League meetings between the two sides and the Blues boss is expecting a typically testing clash on Sunday.
“They’re our bogey team,” said Di Matteo, who confirmed that Ashley Cole will miss the game due to injury. “They seem always to play exceptionally well against us and get results. It’s always a difficult game against Liverpool and it’s difficult to beat them.
“It hasn’t happened too often in the last three seasons and we have to be aware of that, focused, and try to play a good game to be able to win.
“They always seem to play us in a moment where we are not at our best. On Sunday we are in good spirit, full of confidence and the team is playing well so hopefully it will be a different story.”
