Stuart Lancaster has warned England to expect a response from Australia after the Wallabies suffered a disappointing 33-6 defeat by France on Saturday.

The Red Rose enjoyed better fortune against Fiji at Twickenham in their first autumn international, with Charlie Sharples scoring two tries as the home side racked up a 54-12 victory.

England are currently fifth in the world rankings behind France, which is significant in terms of seeding for the 2015 World Cup.

With Lancaster’s men set to also face New Zealand and South Africa in coming weeks, the England head coach is ready for a stern test against Australia, who are ranked second in the world, on Saturday.

“There is bound to be a reaction,” said Lancaster.

“We recognise the challenge that is coming our way. They are a side with character and resilience. We need to make sure we are ready.”

He added: “It was only a couple of weeks ago they pushed the All Blacks and we are expecting that type of performance this weekend.

“We’ve got a confidence that’s building in our side but equally we’re wary of a team that’s been beaten and the reaction it will create.

“They’re not ranked second in the world for nothing. They have performances in them that are of a high quality and I’m sure they’ll be ready for us on Saturday.”

Australia are set to be without David Pocock for the Cook Cup international at Twickenham, and the Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans admitted it has been a difficult year coping with injury problems.

“It’s frustrating, but you can’t pull everything off in one day. Hopefully we can show on Saturday what we’re capable of,” he said.

“We’re not offering excuses, but we just haven’t had our full team on the pitch.”
