Barton, Leiva & more: Twitter reacts as Ibrahimovic punishes England
Joey Barton and Lucas Leiva both tweet their thoughts as Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired a 4-2 win against England
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s four-goal haul inspired Sweden to a 4-2 victory over England at the Friends Arena on Wednesday night.
Goals from Danny Welbeck and Steve Caulker cancelled out the Sweden captain’s opener before the Paris Saint-Germain striker scored three times in the second half, including a spectacular overhead kick, to wrap up victory.
Here is the best of the reaction from the professionals on Twitter.
Everton captain Phil Neville (@fizzer18) is unimpressed by the pitch: “Spend millions on a fantastic stadium-and forgot about the most important bit-the pitch!!!”
Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (@Alex_OxChambo) is pleased to see his friend step up from the Under-21 side: “Good luck to my boy @sterling31 tonight. So glad to see him out there, its been coming and well deserved! #Baller”
But former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) is unimpressed by a different England debutant: “No player awareness there by Steven Caulker, he never looked over his shoulder to see where Ibrahimovic was!”
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) correctly predicts the source of one of England’s two goals: “We have got a goal in us from set plays..Text book wing play from Ashley Young….Welbeck with a real strikers finish! Caulker from a set play, nice work….did I tell you that?!”
England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) points out the symbolism behind Caulker’s goal: “100th cap to first cap. Marvellous!”
Swansea defender Ashley Williams (@AshWills84) is pleased for his former team-mate: “Buzzing for my boy Caulks!”
While former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid) is impressed by Gerrard’s delivery for the goal: “Delivery from Gerrard!!”
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) hails Sterling’s impact: “Sterling can have a massive impact for England. Travels quickly, effectively and regularly into opposition half. Especially when we are below par/flat!”
Stoke defender Robert Huth (@robert_huth) is nevrous for his skipper – with reason too: “I’m actually nervous watching Ryan!”
While Potters goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (@asmir1) is sure it’s the first of many: “Well done to Ryan Shawcross for getting his first cap for England tonight! Many more to come I am sure! Well done skipper! #respect”
Norwich’s Iwan Roberts (@iwanwroberts) is not impressed with Hart for Ibrahimovic’s second: “Poor from the keeper.”
Everton’s Steven Pienaar (@therealstevenpi) is left stunned by the Sweden captain’s fourth: “What a goal from Zlatan, world class!”
Swansea winger Wayne Routledge (@WayneRoutledge) is lost for words: “OMG what have I just seen… #iamzlatan”
As is Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva (@LucasLeiva87): “Ibrahimovic wow!”
Sunderland striker Louis Saha (@louissaha08) ranks the strike as the best ever: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the best goal ever. He chose to score that screamer the day he scored four against England. Bossssss.”
As ever, Marseille midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) has an alternative view: “If only the English FA could have given Ibrahimovic a cap or a run out before those pesky Swede’s nabbed him…”
