Brendan Rodgers insisted Liverpool are still in control of their own destiny and can reach the knockout stage of the Europa League despite a disappointing draw with Young Boys at Anfield.

Jonjo Shelvey scored his fourth goal in Europe this term to put the home side ahead in the first half before Raul Bobadilla’s 52nd-minute strike leveled the Group A encounter.

Joe Cole’s first Liverpool goal in over 18 months appeared to have sealed the Reds’ place in the last-32, but Elsad Zverotic scored with two minutes remaining.

It means Rodgers’ men are level on points with their Swiss opponents and must better Young Boys’ result against Anzhi Makhachkala when they travel to Udinese in a fortnight.

“We didn’t control the game well in the final few minutes,” Rodgers told ITV4.

“But it’s another point and we can still control our own destiny. It makes it harder than we would have liked.

“I’ll always pick a team to win each game. We want to qualify and if we have to go out to Udinese and win then so be it.”

The 39-year-old Liverpool manager did praise Cole and Shelvey for their impressive displays in the Reds midfield against Young Boys.

“Jonjo Shelvey was outstanding as a striker, and it was nice for Joe Cole,” he added.

“He’s worked hard in training. It’s difficult for him, he’s been away on loan but he’s a fighter and that is all he can do.”
