Liverpool 2 Young Boys 2: We need to learn to see out results – Joe Cole
Liverpool 2 Young Boys 2: Joe Cole believes the Reds must learn to see out games after the visitors equalised in the 87th minute
Joe Cole admitted Liverpool needed to learn better game management after Young Boys scored a late equaliser at Anfield in the Europa League.
Brendan Rodgers’ side took a 33rd-minute lead when Cole’s lofted cross found Jonjo Shelvey, who headed into the Young Boys’ net.
However, the visitors restored parity after Raul Bobadilla expertly turned Jordan Henderson and fired past Pepe Reina in the opening seven minutes of the second half.
When Cole scored his first goal since April 2011 in the 72nd minute, Liverpool’s passage into the knockout stage seemed assured.
But Elsad Zverotic scored a dramatic leveller just before full-time which leaves Liverpool needing to better Young Boys’ result against Anzhi Makhachkala when they travel to Udinese in their final Group A fixture.
“It’s disappointing,” said Cole. “It’s just the game management there at the end. We need to see the game out.
“We had a lot of young players on the pitch who’ve played a lot of games, but we should have seen the match out.
“It’s a good finish from Zverotic but now we’ve made it hard for ourselves.
“We’re a developing team and you’ve seen the manager has been brilliant bringing the young players into the club.
“Nobody starts the game knowing everything at such a young age but it’s got to be a lesson learned for us today.”
Cole also reaffirmed his desire to salvage a career at Anfield after playing a hand in both of Liverpool’s opener and scoring against Young Boys.
“It’s my third game back from the hamstring injury and the most I’ve played in a wide position and I felt good,” he added.
“On a personal note it was quite good but the most important thing is we didn’t get the result.
“Of course [I want to be a big player at this club]. I was a good player at West Ham, Chelsea and Lille and I think I can be a big player for Liverpool.
“I’m getting strong every game.”
