Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers: Luis Suárez is the best striker in England
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hails Uruguay international Luis Suárez as the best striker in the Premier League
Brendan Rodgers has hailed Luis Suárez as the best striker in the Premier League ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Uruguay international scored a spectacular equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United last weekend at Anfield, taking his tally to 10 goals in all competitions this term.
Rodgers, who replaced Kenny Dalglish in May, has been impressed by Suárez’s goals and work-rate since taking charge of the Merseyside outfit.
“We have one of the best strikers in the world in Luis Suárez now. Luis is up there in that one per cent of world-class strikers,” Rodgers told Liverpool’s website.
“There is no team in the world who would not want Luis Suárez in it. When I look at what he gives us consistently, I don’t think there’s anyone else in the division who’s better.
“I have been very fortunate in my life to have worked with top strikers, but this is a guy whose energy is relentless. Look at how he’s asked to press the game, for defenders he is a nightmare.
“He never gives them a breather, always making them think. He plays on the limit all the time and he wants to score goals, so he is a great reference point for our team.
“A lot of the time this season he has played the back four on his own. People are looking at Liverpool and thinking if they can control Suárez they might cut out our threat, but they are still unable to do it.”
The 25-year-old has scored 31 goals in 66 appearances after completing a £23.75m switch from Ajax to Liverpool in January 2010.
