Man City 2 Tottenham 1: Andre Villas-Boas insists he was satisfied with his side's display despite defeat at the Etihad
Andre Villas-Boas insisted he was satisfied with Tottenham’s display, despite seeing his side beaten at Manchester City.
The visitors took a first-half lead when Steven Caulker rose above the City defence and directed a powerful header at Joe Hart, with the England goalkeeper diverting the ball into his own net.
However, Mancini’s men responded after the interval, and Sergio Aguero combined with substitute Edin Dzeko to level before the former Wolfsburg striker latched onto David Silva’s pass and fired past Brad Friedel to secure a win which keep them within three points of leaders Manchester United.
“They kept on going and put everything to try and get the result in the last minute,” said Villas-Boas. “We looked good in the first half and didn’t deserve to concede for the game to go 1-1.
“We were playing well and they scored from the counter-attack and it gave them the lift and that was the key moment for them.
“They gained extra motivation and it lifted the stadium up and attack after attack it was difficult to hold on. It was down to the individual quality they have.
“We wanted to avoid 1-1. After 1-1 you have to be very careful. When Mancini went three at the back, we had to adapt in a certain way. We still had a couple of opportunities but around the 60th minute was a key moment, we conceded and it was difficult after that.
“The injury to Kyle Walker also did not help because we had to adapt quickly.”
