Newcastle 1 Maritimo 1: Pardew rues injuries as Magpies reach last 32
Newcastle 1 Maritimo 1: Alan Pardew bemoans the Magpies mounting injury problems after reaching the knockout stage
Alan Pardew bemoaned Newcastle United’s mounting injury problems after the Magpies booked their place in the last 32 courtesy of a draw with Maritimo.
Sylvain Marveaux scored his first Newcastle goal inside 11 minutes to put Pardew’s side in pole position to qualify for the Europa League knockout stage.
However, the Magpies suffered a setback when Maritimo substitute Fidelis leveled in the 79th-minute and the striker had a chance to snatch victory on the stroke of full-time.
While Padew’s men progressed into the next phase, Newcastle did suffer further injury blows as Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse both picked up knocks and were substituted.
“We are getting blow after blow at the moment. Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse both got injured tonight,” said Pardew.
“We will have to wait and see about Papiss but Hatem will be missing on Sunday.
“Hatem is a good player but isn’t everything to this club. I don’t know how long he will be out.
“Papiss got a kick on the thigh. We thought he might stiffen up over half time and he did. He possibly has a chance for Sunday.”
