He’s done nothing wrong! Pardew shock at Di Matteo’s Chelsea sacking
Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits his shock at seeing Roberto Di Matteo sacked by Chelsea on Wednesday
Alan Pardew has admitted his shock at seeing Roberto Di Matteo sacked by Chelsea on Wednesday, saying the Italian has done “absolutely nothing wrong”.
The Chelsea boss was axed on Wednesday morning just hours after the Blues’ Champions League defeat by Juventus, with the club saying that they would be making an announcement over his replacement “shortly”.
Newcastle United boss Pardew was surprised to see the 42-year-old given his marching orders so soon after having led the Blues to a Champions League and FA Cup double last season.
“It’s astonishing really,” said Pardew. “It just goes to show you how precarious we are as Premier League managers. We can’t take anything for granted.
“As far as I’m concerned he’s done absolutely nothing wrong. The philosophy was to perhaps change the look of the team which he’s tried to do and that doesn’t happen overnight. He’s won two competitions in less than a year so it’s unbelievable.”
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is the early bookmakers’ favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge.
